Project Start: 2004 ObjectivesThe aim of the project is to develop a textile sensor that can be integrated into clothing to permanently measure the pressure distribution on human body. The simple design and use of standard materials and well known production methods should lead to a low cost solution. Possible applications are muscle activity monitoring for rehabilitation and sports or detection of sitting posture in seats. |

Achievements
- Single sensors and arrays of 16, 30 and 240 elements has been tested. They consist of electrodes embroidered with conductive yarn on both sides of a compressible spacer. The electrodes build a capacitor which capacitance changes when the spacer is compressed. The capacitance is measured and recorded with external electronics. The prototypes measure pressure up to 10N/cm2 with an accuracy of 5%.
- Hysteresis in the measured data is modelled to reduce the induced error by the hysteresis from 40% to 2%.
- The sensors are successfully used to measure muscle activity on the upper arms and upper legs. A prototype has been built for supervision of the pressure in compression stockings.
