Description

We are currently developing a new range of electronic sensor fibers as part of the Nano-tera TecInTex project. To fabricate electronic sensor fibers we are investigating three types of technologies:

1) Plastic fibers with microfabricated devices (Kinkeldei, Cherenack): we are using microfabrication technologies to pattern sensors and thin-film transistors (TFTs) on plastic substrates, then cutting the substrates into fibers and weaving them into a textile using industrial weaving machines

2) Plastic fibers with attached sensor-chips (Zysset, Kinkeldei, Cherenack): we are bonding IC sensor chips with form-factors in micro-scale onto patterned electrodes on plastic substrates, then cutting the substrates into fibers and weaving them into a textile using industrial weaving machines

3) Small sensor chips attached to textile threads (Zysset, Cherenack): we are attaching the pads of IC sensor chips to metallic textile threads and weaving the resulting multi-filament thread into a textile

Our goal is to integrate these sensor fibers into textiles to create ’smart’ textiles that sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli. Clothing tailored from smart textiles can be used in many fields, but are especially promising for medical applications such as wound care, health risk assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
